CORPORATE BANTS
Do You Understand Corporate Lingo?
One of my friends recently had a situation at her job where she was offered some more work for more money and of course in T-pains economy she accepted even though she knew she didn’t have the bandwidth for everything, long story short she couldn’t come through and she ended up losing the gig simply because she didn’t know how to professionally say she couldn’t meet up.
Now, I don’t want this to happen to you so I’m going to teach you the magic that is corporate lingo. Lingo meaning Language (you probably already knew that though).
There are lots of things we all want to say at work sometimes and they might seem rude unless you know how to put them in a professional way. For example:
Instead of "That's stupid": "That's an... interesting perspective. Perhaps we could explore alternative approaches."
Instead of "You're a pain in the neck": "Your presence occasionally disrupts the workflow. Perhaps we could find a way to better manage our time and resources."
Instead of "You're annoying": "Your enthusiasm occasionally overshadows the task at hand. Perhaps we could focus on the specific goals."
Instead of "I'm already swamped": "My current workload is quite heavy. Could we discuss how to prioritize this task within my existing commitments?"
Instead of "I can't do that much work": "I'm currently working on a few high-priority tasks. Perhaps we could prioritize this and re-evaluate the timeline."
It’s important to recognize that just because you want to seem competent doesn’t mean you have to bite off more than you can chew and you’re allowed to speak up if something makes you uncomfortable.
